This photograph was taken in Alton, it is a well known local tree in a woods, there are many rumours about the reasons for the chains; some say it is the curse of an old scorned beggar woman who was refused by the Earl of Shrewsbury, in return she placed a curse on his family; 'For every branch that fell, a member of his family would die'. Surely enough a branch did fall in a storm and a relative did die, so it was thought that the Earl had his servants chain the tree to protect it from causing further deaths. However, there is another account recorded, the Earls son was riding in the woods one day when he happened to see an old woman underneath the tree, as he approached a large tree branch fell and killed him, the Earl then had the tree chained.
It was taken with a Fuji Digital Compact Fine pix HS5, Black and White and is available in 10"x12" printed onto 240gsm quality photo paper.
