Original artwork description:

Ceci n’est pas… This is not…
This piece began as the simple combination of the blue and the dark brown shapes; I love the delicacy of the long, thin horizontal line together with the massive, and intensely luminous blue. Even with only two shapes, the suggestion of a Chinese Junk was obvious, if totally random. For a while I left it just with those two shapes, until I made the bright citrus piece. The orange shape emphasises the blue brilliantly (blue and orange are complementary colours, meaning when placed near each other, each enhances the appearance of the other). I had to think for a few days about whether to keep the orange piece- it makes the association of a boat even clearer. I usually try to avoid creating direct references to specific objects but I love the relationship of the three shapes to each other so the orange ‘lifeboat’ stayed. It makes that already intense, beautiful blue really pop. In homage to Rene Magritte’s painting “Ceci n’est pas une pipe” This is not a pipe (The painting is in fact, an image of a pipe), I chose the partial title for my work as a way to acknowledge the initially unintentional, yet partially deliberate creation of what looks quite like a boat, even though it isn’t actually a boat at all.

I think of my collages more as drawings because that’s how they begin. I draw with oil sticks, pastels and pencils on large sheets and then cut them down into various shapes which I recombine into new colour compositions. I don’t try to ‘make’ the shapes, but rather just start cutting and see what happens. The images are intuitive; they reflect my emotions and desires or are inspired by something in my surroundings.

Ultimately, what I’m after are the most stunningly beautiful, luminous, delicious colour combinations. I want to put colours together that fill your eyes with light; draw luscious, organic lines that make your mouth water, and create perfectly balanced compositions that feel like a light summer breeze flowing by.
