Artist's description:

Original oil painting on canvas inspired by a trip to Scarborough beach in Yorkshire. It was painted from a photograph I took on the day, but what I love about this artwork is that it could be just about anywhere on any beach.

To me it evokes memories of childhood and my youth. Trips to the beach for fish and chips and ices cream and if lucky a ride on the funfair. Seagulls would always be circling and dive bombing the unsuspecting like world war two pilots on the hunt for a dropped chip or ice cream cone.

As I get older I seem to notice these majestic masters of the sky more than ever before. At the beach, circling behind tractors on fields in land or perched on fences watching as the contractors roll in with bulldozers to construct more sprawling housing estates which encroach and dominate the landscape.

To me , the seagulls always look like they are holding a council meeting or
organizing a protesting....And who would blame them. In this artwork with the seagulls gathered on the beach I was in two minds whether to include the cola can which was in the original photo. I included it as I think it is relevant to us as a society now. With a growing problem with plastic waste and pollution in land and in the sea, I hope this artwork is a reminder to protect our heritage for future generations so they too can enjoy memories of long summer days spent at the beach.

The title of this work 'catch the wave' was aptly inspired by the Coke a Cola add which ran in 1986.
Lots of movement and energy in this piece form building layers of glazes and scumbles and working into them with a pallet knife to add texture.
The painting incorporates the borders so does not require framing unless preferred and is ready to hang immediately
