Carn Liath Broch sits beside the A9 highway between Golspie and Brora, North of my home. Although dating from the Iron Age the walls here still stand to around 12m high in places. It's an impressive ruin, which invites you in through a carefully-made doorway in it's deep walls.
On the day I specifically visited to make sketches and take photo's as part of my preparation for the Ruin exhibition, the sun was shining and the landscape glowing. I've kept this bright, light feeling in my final painting, as I enjoy the contrast of crumbling ruins, decay and aging, and the joyful colours.
