The Collection by Leah Michelle is the beginning of a new premium series of artworks created and inspired by Old Masters’ painting techniques. Primarily expressionist in nature in that Leah’s work is concerned with finding a visual equivalent to an emotional or spiritual state, her new work also attempts to create a relationship to the history of art by connecting the relatively new phenomena of abstraction with the spirit, colour and techniques from paintings that have influenced the history of art. She uses her own premium handmade paints, diamond dust and a lacquer gloss on top to create an abstract composition that intends to capture the vibrancy of past masterpieces whilst bringing their essence up to date through abstraction. In creating her own paints by hand mixing rare pigment powders from L. Cornelissen and Son such as lapis lazuli light and dark, malachite, carmine red genuine and still de grain, with her own blend of binding agents, she is able to focus on what is most important to her art: the phenomena of colour at it’s most primal state. This reduction of art to what is in essence a study of colour allows her to capture the present moment and design paintings which create a dialogue with the past. In this fast-paced world, Leah's Collection paintings try to draw attention to what perhaps has been forgotten within the world of art: the beauty within life, love, and art itself.
