Artist's description:

This painting depicts a man in front of a seascape embracing a nude woman surrounded by gold. They are two characters of the Odyssey, an epic poem attributed to Homer: Calypso was a nymph who lived on an island in the Mediterranean and Odysseus is the protagonist of the Odyssey. The Odyssey describes his trials and adventures during a ten year journey across the Mediterranean, all the while trying to go home. According to Homer, Calypso detained Odysseus for seven years on her island. To show her hold over him, I painted the lovers in an embrace with Odysseus clinging on to Calypso and used an abstract golden rectangle to symbolize the gilded cage this love affair was for Odysseus.

This oil painting is a handmade, unique artwork, signed at the back. It is painted on linen, using artist grade oil paints, media and varnish. The painting is composed of several overlapping layers that work together to create a three-dimensional effect. You can find more detailed information on my painting method including a few examples of successive paint layers of a painting in the 'Me at work' section of this website.
