Artist's description:

"Butterfly #3" is one of my most rare Big Sur driftwood butterfly pieces in that I have never found another piece of driftwood like it, which means it is either from an indigenous species of tree that is nonetheless uncommon in the Big Sur, California environs, or I suppose it's possible for a piece of this particular kind of tree to have floated in from just about anywhere!

Whatever the case, though, this particular piece I find simply gorgeous in it's minimalist simplicity.

As with all of the pieces in the Live-Edge Butterfly series, the delicately crafted driftwood wings are attached to a 12" square sheet of 3/8" acrylic, which is frosted on one side only and treated with a proprietary blend of soy wax & natural pine tree turpentine (which is odorless after mixing with the soy wax) to help protect the wood and to give it a subtle sheen. Moreover, each piece can be hung via a French cleat--a.k.a., z-bar--to a wall, as well as simply placed on a flat surface as any free-standing sculpture would.

Materials used:

Big Sur, California driftwood, acrylic sheet, mounting hardware
