This stylish one-of-a-kind contemporary nautical painting is the perfect statement piece for the design lover. I love nautical scenes, but I feel like sometimes they can be too “stodgy” for my liking. This is my solution to that! “Business and Pleasure” by Megan Carty is a 15×30 inch contemporary nautical painting that adds unique design to your well-styled space. It comes wired in the back and ready to hang. (I recommend 2 picture hooks spaced several inches apart evenly to hang the wire on.) The gallery-wrapped canvas is 1.5 inches deep; the sides are painted a deep indigo blue so framing is not required. It is gloss-varnished for protection. The painting is signed in paint on the front and in pencil on the back.
I wanted to explore my interest in collage and graphic design with this painting. To create this piece, I affixed strips of newspaper to the canvas with archival gel medium. This created the wrinkles and textures I wanted. Then, I painted the whole thing a thick layer of Titanium White. Then, I added a glaze of sepia brown to create an aged look. I wiped it off in places to make it look distressed. Then, I drew in the different nautical elements that I found to be beautiful and created 3 vignettes that work alone or together. I also added some graphic details in the typography (a mid-century feel in the typeface). The numbers on the left evoke a boat registration number. The “ME” is for Maine (where I grew up!) and the numbers 0428 are my daughter Paige’s birthday. The big 3 at the right represents my 3 children (and the fact that I love the shape and design of the number three itself). I painted it all over the course of time and then spray-varnished it to protect it from the elements. Preppy and classic with a twist.
My artworks are made to bring a sense of comfort and peace to the viewer. I find so much inspiration in old weathered structures…buildings, boats, barns, houses…they all have such a rich history and story to tell. I’m endlessly curious about them. I want to share the same comforting nostalgia I feel with you!
