Artist's description:

In Buddhist philosophy, all beings are reincarnated over and over again on the Wheel of Life. There are many realms which we go through: the human realm, the realm of the gods, the warrior or demigod realm, the animal realm, the realm of the hungry ghosts and the hell realm. We are thrown from one world to another until we are able to reach enlightenment and leave the wheel of life. We all have the ability to develop a buddha nature, to ascend to Nirvana and to leave Samsara. "Buddha Cat" was the first in a series of Buddha animals entitled "Sacred Beings". The image of the cat is based on my cat Diego Rivera. Diego, a black feral I had rescued, was hit by a car on October 31, 2009. Devastated by Diego’s death, I made this image to honor his life, love and friendship. I have done this image many times and in many different mediums. Repeating this image has become a form of meditation, offering and prayer. My hope is that Diego has evolved to a better place on the Wheel of Life and that eventually he may reach enlightenment and become a Buddha himself.
