Artist's description:

Bretagne is the historic province of France now called Brittany – it is also a large ferry boat operating from Portsmouth to St Malo. We are voyaging home in it from St Malo on a bright sunny August day watching the sun set and hoping to see porpoises or dolphins chasing the slim-stream. It's calm enough to paint but I'm anxious to avoid getting bogged down in perspective because the light is more interesting. The steam from the ship's funnel mingles with cloud drifting westward and I fight to keep my painting from blowing away in the wind…this will keep me happy for many weeks during early morning painting sessions at home.
