Artist's description:

"No better way is there to learn to love Nature than to understand Art. It dignifies every flower of the field. And, the boy who sees the thing of beauty which a bird on the wing becomes when transferred to wood or canvas will probably not throw the customary stone."
-- Oscar Wilde

The process of this piece began with a pencil drawing of this Rufous Sided Towhee I photographed in my yard. Layering watercolors, collage and graphite pencil work, I worked to create a more interesting visual experience with depth beyond merely copying from a photograph.

This piece has been finished with two coats of archival satin varnish, creating a contemporary but natural look. The edges are finished with varnish as well, but left natural and often display drips of paint from the process. No framing required.
