Artist's description:

The Bovolo tower - or Snail Shell, as it translates from Venetian - is hidden down a very insignificant alleyway, and visitors are always surprised and delighted to find it. The owner and architect of this fairytale building, Signor Contarini, had it in his head that he wanted to be able to ride his horse up to his bedroom, so he had the staircase built just so he could...
I've tried to capture the beauty and fragility of Venice - and of the Bovolo tower itself - in this painting. When I last saw the tower, it was in a state of decay, with trees and shrubs growing round it and through it.
It has since been restored.
