BOTTLE OVEN GHOSTS - Elektra Longton
by Terry Woolliscroft

Bottle Ovens at the Elektra Porcelain Factory, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England. Now demolished.
Abstract inspired by the architecture of The Potteries.

Acrylic on canvas 16"x20"

Original acrylic painting inspired by the landscape and architecture of The Potteries of North Staffordshire, particularly the buildings on the site of Elektra Porcelain Works, Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, England.

The inspiration for this picture came to me some years ago. The architecture of the old potbanks with their huge towering bottle ovens (where clay was fired to temperatures above 1000C, with coal, to make pottery) and the raging fires which they held within were begging to be put onto canvas. This is my take on the bottle oven and its fiery innards.

Using a palette knife and brushes, I painted this with bold strokes of heavy-body acrylic paint. I wanted to create an attractive texture to the painting which would appeal and entice. I used layers to give the painting quality and make it interesting to look at from a distance and up close. I really like how the colours and atmophere of this painting came out in thefinished work
