An energetic and spontaneous oil painting expressing freedom, movement and celebration for my love of playing bongos. For a number of years I played as a nightclub percussionist alongside dj's in london's house music scene... And my name is Joe!
This painting took an intriguing twist as I painted it. Whilst working from a photograph of a “random” bongo player, the happy character spontaneously morphed into someone who looks surprisingly like me! With a few flicks of the palette knife an “accidental self-portrait” emerged and so it was to be! I chose to leave the face unchanged from that point on.
I allowed the paint to run and drip before adding gestural, heavy textured strokes with my palette knife.
I carefully hand painted a plain wooden frame in colours that I mixed -“Evening blue” and yellow ochre - to best compliment the feature colours of the painting.
You can almost hear the drums and music in this piece – or at least I can!
