Artist's description:

Businesses with backyards in New York City create a kind of enchanting space hidden to passersby on the street. Suddenly the space between the backs of buildings--a kind of negative space-- opens up with a shared intimacy as back room windows overlook each other. Tiny backyards become little stages and on a pretty day the chatter of an outdoor cafe echos and bounces off the backs of old these tenements.

The last days of an Indian summer saw me and my sketchbook cozy on the eclectic deck of my local coffee house in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. Elk Cafe has a huge backyard and mismatched furniture. On this afternoon my eye catches the a backdrop of butterscotch yellow leaves and a refurbished turquoise rod iron chair posing like scenery on a stage.
