Artist's description:

Imagine receiving the most beautiful and unusual bouquet of flowers ever. That's what happened last year and I was so inspired - I could not stop myself from using them as the source for the whole Happy Birthday series. This one is number 5 in that series. I had not really painted anything with flowers until this point. Clearly the start of a new beginning as I have had so much fun through the creation phase.

When I started this painting I had not planned for the birds to appear. They just kind of seemed like the natural addition and flew in about half way through. Is there any symbolic meaning behind a bluebird I wondered. Of course when you do a little research you find that some believe that the bluebird symbolises happiness, joy and contentment.

Another feature that was unplanned are the archways. Somehow I intuitively knew they should be added in. Archways make us think perhaps of new beginnings and transitions from one phase to another. Isn't that what birthdays are partly about? Celebrating the end of one phase and transitioning to another.

Materials used:

Professional quality Amsterdam and Golden Acrylics, oil stick & polymer glazes on stretched canvas. Golden acrylic isolation coat plus 4 layers of matt varnish.
