Artwork description:

This blackbird is frequent visitor to our bird feeders all winter and he and his wife raise their brood tucked away in amongst the ivy.

This is a handprinted reduction linocut created from my own sketches and is part of a small edition of 10 prints.

With reduction relief printing as each print is built up more and more of the lino is cut from the block. Each colour is then printed on top of the previous one, the printable area of the block being reduced with each colour, usually working from the very lightest colours through to the darkest. Most of my prints have around 4 - 12 layers of colour.

It takes a bit of planning to work out the sequence of colours and cutting, as once you have cut a section away there is no going back!

Each individual print is a unique piece of art, and because they are individually hand printed each have subtle differences and variations of colour and line.

When I’ve finished printing I may embellish the image with drawn line or additional painted details.

I use a combination of vegetable oil based inks and also water-based inks for my work, which give a fabulous depth of colour and also means that I can clean up my tools and blocks without using harmful solvents.
