Original artwork description:

A continuation of my 'Birds of the Rhone Alps' series of paintings. Some of this series I have been lucky enough to have published, like my Ptarmigan who features in the BTO's 'Into the Red' book on endangered UK birds.

The black grouse is a charming heavy ground feeding bird, hoovering up pine needles in winter as the mainstay of its diet. Its black plumage is a wealth of colour in the right light, ranging from dark inky blues to delicate lilacs, all topped off with a shock of red from it's wonderful crest.

It has a fascinating array of calls ranging from gentle bubbling coos to a cat like hiss.

Painted in acrylic on a page of 'The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady'

Materials used:

recycled book page and acrylic
