Artist's description:

A painting from my current body of work exploring notions of identity and humanity in the technology-driven age of the internet. I take the traditional discipline of oil painting and perhaps the most commonly represented subject in all of art history; the human body, and use digital techniques to provide a distinctly modern visual disruption to an otherwise antiquated form of expression.

I am simultaneously celebrating and questioning the role of technology in our lives and how it affects our own identities and how we perceive others.

In this painting I am combining my previously quite separate practices of collage and painting before heavily editing it Photoshop until the digital modifications are very obvious. Although the finished product is created solely through traditional oil painting techniques, the end result shows evidence of every step of the process, the original collage, the digital manipulation, and the final unifying physicality of the painted surface.

The digital editing of images is ubiquitous not just in the world of fashion and celebrities, but almost all images uploaded to social media. From the simple application of an Instagram filter, to more heavy-handed Photoshopping, the vast majority of the images we present to the world have undergone some kind of transformation which the editor believes enhances them in a way which will make them more appealing. What interests me is how we relate to this new ‘improved’ version of the image, as opposed to the original image, and beyond that, to the subject itself. With the use of collage techniques, the subsequent digital manipulation, and finally the painting of the result, this removal from the original subject within my work goes several steps beyond the already substantial distortion of reality.
