Johanne Brouillette’s artworks are only a suggestion of the human figure or abstract territory. Driven towards the light, energy and ever changing colors found in nature and the feelings they evoke in her they have become her sources of inspiration.
She will often start a painting with a few drawn graphite lines. Then her fascination with textures takes over. Using collage, gesso, wood ashes and plaster to create a ground on the canvas she spontaneously applies layers of acrylic paint using large brushes and spatulas all over the canvas. Then begins a dance whereby she partially covers and then reapplies thick and thin layers of paint.
Her paintings can take days, weeks or even months to complete. She searches, digs and uncovers things over and over again. It can take up to 15 or 20 layers of adding and subtracting to uncover the final painting.
‘My paintings express this deep connection and dialogue we build with one another as they are brought to life.’
