Original artwork description:

The title, "Between the Dunes", points to the foot path between the dunes. My family and I vacation at one of South Carolina's beaches. On our walk down to the beach, we are careful to stay on the path. Preserving the natural dunes is critical to protecting the land at the edge of the ocean. The plant life that can survive in sandy soil, gives the dunes structure to withstand the high tides. Waves have exposed the roots of some of the dune's plant life. It is this root structure I was drawn to. I love the look of a dune that has been attacked by high tide waves. The colors and visual quality of the sand is captured by using short, loaded brush strokes. The roots and surrounding plants are handled in with hard, sharp scratching marks. This technique helps describe the interaction of the hardy plant life against the soft sand. This was a joy to paint and I am very pleased with the outcome. When I look at the painting, I feel the breeze and smell the salty air These are happy memories. This beach painting has fully cured now and is ready to hang in that special place.
