I started a sketch of this tor on Belstone, it was just before New Year, as the sun went down the colours changed dramatically. So I took a photo and coloured the sketch at home in rich reds and pastel shades of violet and lilac. Then I did this oil painting from the sketch and photo.
Despite the cloudless sky it was a very cold day and where the sun hit the grey granite it turned them red while the shadows never got any direct sunlight and remained a reflective icey blue.
Many walkers were there pausing to stand on the rocks all round. I captured the need that some had to enjoy the view high up from this dark, brooding wilderness.
