On stage everything is perfection and effortless. I wanted to paint a dancer that is bone tired, the sores visible on her feet, her head drooped with exhaustion. There is a beauty in the determination and struggle. This is the wonderful Isobel Rose, a dancer I was fortunate to find a little while ago and have painted a number of times. In this work I was striving for intimacy, although I considered it a big piece I have used quite a small canvas to draw the viewer in. Its quite dark, her figure half in shadow, as if shes in the corner of the theater, back stage, all her energy gone. It's a scene not meant to be seen, a peek through Degas' keyhole into the life of a ballerina.
Painting is framed professionally in a 75mm Bronze Floral Embossed (high Pattern) wooden frame. It is quite a traditional, high quality frame. It is framed without glass - which allows the oil paints to breathe and stay healthy.
