I painted this study in preparation for a larger painting, Bedgebury Pinetum. Near where I live in Kent is a National Pinetum, a spacious area filled with amazing trees of all kinds and a lake where there are lilies in summer. The bank is quite abrupt and looking into the water gives lovely reflections of overhanging trees but at the same time rocks are visible underneath the surface of the water. This is a composition painted to show these different levels that come into view, the sky and clouds above, the trees reflected below, the actual surface of the water with its lilies, and then also the different world below the surface, rocks, reeds etc. It is loosely painted mainly using a palette knife.
