Close to where I live in Kent is the Bedgebury National Pinetum, which is a very large space filled with amazing trees of all kinds and a lake where there are lilies in summer. The bank is quite abrupt and looking into the water gives lovely reflections of overhanging trees but at the same time rocks are visible underneath the surface of the water. I was inspired to paint this painting showing the different levels that come into view, the sky and clouds above, the trees reflected, the actual surface of the water with its lilies, and then also the different world below the surface, rocks, reeds etc.
