Artist's description:

This painting is part of my Fairytale collection in which I re-imagine classic fairytales and folk stories. This piece is based on La Belle et la Bete written by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont.

Beauty and the Beast was an obvious choice for me. I love the contrast between the two characters. I wanted that contrast to drive the image: fragility against savagery, humanity against nature.

I started by doing a lot of studies of contemporary 'beauty' and various animals. Bears, big cats and wolves formed the basis of my studies. My sketchbook is full of Beast designs. At one point he looked more like a big cat, but the wolf-like design felt more vicious and more original somehow.

I wanted to the Beast to have a primal quality. He's unpredictable. He's dangerous. The girl on the other hand is gentle, steady and still. This carried across not only to the design of the characters, but also to their poses, expressions, and the composition of the final painting.
