BARCODED. FIGURE Painting - Original acrylic painting on canvas by NadYa Rego - 56"x56" (1400mm x 1400mm)
Mindless excessive consumption causes irreparable damage to the nature and climate of the planet in this dramatic painting. On a fire-red Earth whose climate is warming rapidly, girls hold barcoded objects. These white rectangles are ultimately devoid of meaning, colorless, non-functional, and disposable items. They are melting like the ice at the polar caps of our world. The Blue background symbolizes the Absolute. It has a sense of volume, but no perspective. Nadya Rego often paints a background like the one shown here to symbolize the quantum nature of space and time and the spiritual realm. Within her paintings, there are also things that have no lasting meaning. Material goods such as clothing are painted as silhouettes, separate from the background and unaffected by light. People are depicted as part of the universal absolute. The outlines of their faces are a suggestion of light and shadow that disintegrates into the infinite background. The girls are part of the background, but their clothing is inanimate and temporary. On one of the bar-coded objects, a pink rat sits, starkly separate from the background. The artist deliberately excluded this rat from the spiritual world by using a solid color, to indicate that it is soulless like the clothing and the barcodes. This is the "Pink Jade" manipulator, driving our unnecessary consumption.
