Artist's description:

I found these two hawthorns on the moors near my home. They look as if they are supporting each other, one leaning on the other, or perhaps both leaning together. They seemed strangely human, about to dance, or whispering to each other. I found them quite moving.

I did a basic sketch of them and took a photo. I then drew it in more detail straight on to the vinyl and carved away for many weeks to leave the image in relief, as shown in the photo here. I printed the background colour by making a second block of exactly the same size. I used a huge roller to blend together the following strips of colour - blue-grey, lighter blue-grey, light pink, light peachy orange and darker orange. Once I'd printed that on the paper, I inked up the trees in a bluey-black and printed them on top.

Materials used:

vinyl flooring, printmaking inks, paper
