Artist's description:

One of a series of five tree/plant paintings. My botanical pictures grew out of my earlier career as a medievalist. I've always been interested in ancient herbals, books and paintings about plants and the natural world.

I like to try growing aubergines for their thick, silvery, downy, wavy leaves elegantly poised on stiff little stalks, their beautiful mauve flowers with yellow centre; their shiny near-black or purple or stripy fruits. It's a bonus that they're a culinary delight.

Materials used:

mixed media on marouflaged board (fabric on board): plaster, acrylics and pigments with metal leaf

Aubergine (2013)
