Artist's description:

The Arabic word "jadhb" describes a state of irresistible attraction, and in Sufism it is applied to the pull towards God. The passive participle of the word, "majdhûb", has come to mean “fool, idiot” in everyday language — which is why Sufis sometimes call themselves "God's personal idiots".

For this piece I wanted to evoke the irresistible pull, which is done by different levels of concentric circles pulling you into the piece: the innermost one is also the deepest. All the elements are cut and gilded by hand then assembled on mountboards which are themselves layered. The total depth is about 3.5 cm.

Materials used:

Acrylic and metal leaf on paper, hand-cut and assembled on matte board.
