Artist's description:

In ancient Greek mythology, Atlas is punished for rebelling against the gods of the Olympus. As punishment he has to bear the weight of the earth and the heavens for eternity. And this being Greek mythology it doesn't end there. He gets tricked by Heracles, which gives him a short-lived freedom. But he ends up bearing it all again for eternity. When I read Jeanette Winterson's retelling of this story, Weight, it just stayed with me. And this painting is the result.
