Artist's description:

"Asylum" Acrylic on Wood Panel. Panel size is 24" x 24" Lightly varnished. 2015.

The “Abandoned/Restored” group of works are about expressing torn down values and the process of rebuilding what was destroyed. The bottom line is that a life matters in spite of all of the sorts of conflicts which come along. When chaos or catastrophe hits, no matter how devastating it may seem, instinct tells us to rebuild life with what is left behind, even if it will never be the same again.

My theme, “Abandoned/Restored,” is a continuation of the previous
themes, “Interiors,” “Fortresses,” and “Retreats;” however its images depict ruins, rubble, nurses, and those wounded in a war from the last century. As one is being restored, one can not forget the value of humor or humility. Some paintings depict pierrot, or a harlequin’s actings to give the comedic aspect of process of restoration.

Biographical info:

Arts and crafts were among of Yukio’s hobbies while growing up in Japan. An early influence on him was the genre of comic books. Starting out to become a cartoonist, his interests widened to a fuller scope of art. In college, he started to appreciate the traditions and history of art both from eastern and western cultures. In one of his series he tries to depict life of the1900s and juxtapose those images with a more contemporary look. Yukio’s primary medium is acrylic paint; however he has incorporated some unorthodox objects such as antique pieces of wood and paper to give his work an aged look.

He says, “I’m interested in images that bring out emotional responses. Whatever the feedback, I enjoy creating art that gives viewers a lasting impression. Whether the content is specific or abstract, certain visual compositions can create an intense harmony between viewers and images. That harmony can go far beyond this dimension and transcends logic.”
