Artist's description:

This is the first acrylic/sand tablet I made following a visit to southern Brittany in 2005, using materials collected from a beach there. It is made of coloured acrylic-fixed sand studded with shells, shell fragments and stones, arranged in an 8x8 matrix as a reference to the game of chess. The beach is near La Foret Fouesnant, and has an underlying igneous and metamorphic geology which provides a variety of sand textures including some with coarse crystalline particles. The beach is strewn with glittering stones of quartz, calcite and feldspar and shell fragments that are smoothed hinges of bivalve molluscs, sometimes with violet and pink revealed. I spent ages collecting these jewels, all of which would otherwise have been ground into sand by now.......

Materials used:

Acrylic paint, sand, shell, stone

Arrangement of Matter 1 (2005)
