This painting is part of a series of 4 that came about through my contemplation of the behaviour of sunlight as it travelled through glass and crystal prisms. It was during my time in the American Southwest that I grew obsessed with the sky, with the unimaginable beauty of the desert. There I came across Arcosanti, the work of Italian architect Paolo Soleri. It's an urban laboratory in the high desert of central Arizona, designed according to the concept of Arcology. A concept for cities in the future that embody the co-presence of architecture and ecology, an experiential space to "prototype" a self-sustaining community, an environment in harmony with man. There are five real-world arcologies under construction right now.
I imagined what this futuristic idea of a community could look like if one day, our carbon-negative cities looked like arcologies.
