An entertaining mythological battle of good versus evil. An unsuspecting angel is pierced at the knees by a horned adversary. The assault and wounds are symbolic, reflected only slightly in the two poses. The assailant’s “natural” weapons are concealed in a abundance of red hair. Her spiraling horns contrast with the smooth arcs of the angel’s wings. The winged figure is untraditionally dark-haired and her feathers appear more ethereal than physical.

Finished stone textures juxtaposes natural and manufactured worlds. This duality is further illustrated by the division between crisp lines in the lower portion of the picture and the hazy forms above.

Lush, golden clouds hang over the sunset like in a romantic painting. A castle spire materializes in the background. Echoes of Maxfield Parrish and Jerry Uelsmann influence the colors and structure of this composition. The use of idealized colors and forms creates a harmonious, fairytale-like feeling. The billowing clouds and rich glowing earth tones take us to an alternate reality. The fantasy milieu connects with the adolescent in us all.

Surreal theme

An homage to surrealism: alien colors, questionable physics, and general incongruity. Inspired by the surrealist art movement that explored the irrational nature of the mind. Bizarre irregularities make this collection of images seem like hallucinations from the subconscious.

False color technique

Using the technique of false color, I produce a restrained color palette. The method is inspired by my training in oil painting, and pays homage to the classic technique of hand-colored photography. Color is applied selectively to give a greater illusion of depth as well as evoke an emotional response.

About the artist

A K Nicholas is a visual artist specializing in figure (fine art nudes) photography. An unapologetic celebration of the female form, these images invite the viewer to explore a dreamlike world. Photography is simply a starting point on this journey to an unknown destination. His unorthodox aesthetic blends sensual imagery with a painterly style of manipulated colors.

Born in the United States, raised in the Middle East, this artist is formally trained in painting, drawing, and photography.
