Artist's description:

Painting: Acrylic and Oil on Canvas.

As my daughter headed off on her Gap year to volunteer in a school in South Africa, I imagined what it would be like to see the landscape for the first time. The red earth, the heat haze, a emptiness ready for her to fill with experience. I work in vigorous strokes in acrylic, then build up layers or 'veils' with oils until the surface starts to vibrate and hum. At 6ft x 4ft I want the viewer to feel a sense of quiet and absorption, immersed in the painting before them, seeing slowly the colours emerge in different lights. I work in bands, like the three act structure of a narrative; a simple framework for a complex depth.

Materials used:

acrylic, oil
