Artist's description:

The term abyss (from the ancient Greek ἄβυσσος, ábyssos, meaning "without bottom, of immense depth") designates the very deep zones of an ocean, beyond 3 000 m depth. Also called the deep, the abyss occupies two thirds of the planet Earth. With a total absence of light, a great cold and a high pressure, it is an environment totally hostile to the man.

The abyss has long been very poorly known; 95% is unexplored, the deep sea being mapped with much less precision than the Moon and more men had gone into space than deep in the oceans.

In this year 2037, a scientific mission succeeds for the first time in exploring the deepest ocean trenches and in systematically listing previously unknown forms of life.
This exhibition brings together some of the rare images reported by explorers, made thanks to the latest discoveries on the bioluminescence produced by living organisms, the only source of light at these depths. They document an abundance of life in unknown ecosystems and corroborate one of the main hypotheses regarding the origin of life on Earth.
