Artist's description:

This is a single plate Relief Print from a hand drawn portrait and fixed onto a metal plate using Solar Plate Printmaking Technique. The photo-drawing aims to reassert the beauty of the well-worn human face and the marks made on it by full and eventful lives. It has been relief inked in gold and printed onto black card using a printing press.

It seeks to offer a new perspective of beauty in the fertile chaos and proliferation of our image-saturated culture. Against a back-drop of the media’s obsession with unattainable male & female beauty, this ‘photo-drawing’ provides a kinder alternative and celebrates the wonder of a face in which a life time of living is expressed in a fine tracery of lines and exposes something of the subjects true nature.

Hovering between drawing and photography the ‘photo-drawings’ subvert the idea of the photograph’s ability to present reality. These images rework photographic sources in a new-take on the notion of the postmodern copy. Their power lies in that they cannot or will not allow themselves to be fully grasped; they look like drawings rendered in lines, dots and squiggles but ‘photoshop’ filters remain as the palimpsest beneath these marks.

The edition size is 50, and the prints are all numbered and signed on the front, beneath the image and embossed using my SdR logo. This print is sold unframed but if you would like the double mount (cream and gold) and/or the frame, I can quote you a price for that addition.

Materials used:

Fine line pen. tissue paper. Polymer coated metal plate. Gold Ink. Printing Press.
