A Lesson In Insobriety looks at addiction in general but depicted with alcohol. The piece looks at the cycle of addiction. The top left figure is the sober addict. The figure is depicted wearing a suit and voting, he is a working member of society, he is coping. Things are going well but he has an itch. Always at the back of his mind he knows he can let go of the troubles he still has that alcohol subdues. Things are going too well, he wants to self destruct symbolised by the anarchy sign. Finally smiling as he pulls the trigger he decides to drink again. By drinking he blows all his troubles out of his head, his face is blank and happy. But as he sobers all his troubles come back even worse than before depicted by the "kettle head". His problems boil and brew in his hungover, paranoid tortured, mind. These issues pour into a drip which fuels the need for alcohol depicted by tubes running to the three figures. Each falling deeper into addiction until the cycle starts again.
