Artist's description:

My second painting to celebrate International Women's Day is a tongue in cheek exploration of the concept of matriarchy. I've used a simple collaged base of book pages from "The Best Way"; a series of books originally published in 1915 that were practical household guides written`for housewives by housewives' to keep the little woman busy at home organising the nursery and keeping house.... I have juxtaposed these with a portrait of a young elephant, an animal known for it's superior intelligence and it's ordered social set up in which females and males lead virtually separate lives.
The herds of elephants that we are familiar with are all female and are led by a single Matriarch, usually the oldest and largest female, who keeps order and rule in a calm, collected and organised way... no "Best Way" books are needed for them!

My elephant has been painted in a combination of acrylic inks and paints in a semi naturalistic style concentrating on it's textural qualities. As with my Cartography paintings I have left some areas semi translucent to allow the collaged base to show through to interact with, and unify, the painting as a whole.

I really enjoyed painting her, I hope this shows in the finished piece!
I have simply initialled the painting however I have titled, signed and dated the reverse. Painted on a prepared canvas panel "A Housewife Ought to Know..." is ready for mounting and framing.

Materials used:

Natural canvas panel, book pages, acrylic paints, inks and medium
