This is a painting done in watercolor, alcohol ink, and acrylic on a flat sheet of 144lb textured polypropylene (Yupo). The polypropylene provides an exceptionally smooth surface that does not warp when exposed to moisture, and the result is a very flat background over which the paint seems to float.
I've been playing with the tension created by partially obscuring a very colorful background with a drab, mono-tonal foreground. The background in this piece was painted with very bright watercolors and alcohol inks, which seep into the surface of the polypropylene, creating a sort of dyed effect. The foreground is done with black, white, and silver fluid acrylics mixed into acrylic pouring medium. The pouring medium rises a couple millimeters above the surface of the substrate, creating a clear distinction between the two visual fields.
