Artist's description:

Located between two war torn buildings, directly on the Mediterranean sea front, stood (and still stands) a fine, intact three story apartment building constructed in 1900.

In 1961, looking to buy a holiday home in the south of France, my father took a monochrome photograph of this building which became our cherished family holiday home for a little over twenty years. He kept a print of it in a regularly used wallet and, as a result, the edges and surface of the photo became worn and crumpled. Over time, the physical image became to closely resemble the nature of the scene it depicted.

In the mid 1960s, the dilapidated buildings on either side of our home, as well as many others along the sea front were replaced by modern, six story, low ceiling apartment blocks; times were changing, fast, and I was growing up. I had become an art student and much painting and drawing was produced whilst living there and time spent in and around its location has proved to be amongst the most influential periods of my life.

With access to a screen printing press in the Bristol college, where I was lecturing in art in the mid 1970s, I was able to create a number of print series. In this particular series, I elected to use only four emotionally loaded colours. The strong magenta colour underpinning the composition was chosen to express something of the enervating but stimulating heat that pervades most every activity while living there.

Physical matter may crumble but memory and sentiments live on.
Great passions were experienced whilst living in 63 Quai Laurenti in Menton, and many have not yet abated. I now live in the south of France with my family and we are carrying on.
