Original artwork description
With Wings I wanted to explore how a substantial chair could at the same time appear transparent and almost weightless.
I chose perforated metal for the seat and back because light can travel through the material instead of being stopped by it. The curved aluminium construction forms two large sweeping lines around the body, almost like a pair of wings. Depending on the direction of the light, the perforated surfaces create changing patterns of light and shadow.
The entire structure has been finished in matt black powder coating. The restrained colour allows the geometry to take centre stage and gives the chair a strong graphic presence without making it dominant within an interior.
Wings reflects an idea that returns throughout my work: a piece of furniture does not need upholstery or decoration to have character. Construction itself can become the decoration.
