Syncopation (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Charles BEALL

24 x 12 x 2.5" / 24 x 12" (actual image size)

$850

Dozens of wooden blocks in blue, gold, copper, white and red crowd a black ground, each one a note in an irregular rhythm. Colours repeat across the surface but never in a regular pattern: a block of gold leaf here, a flash of cobalt there, a white plank, a sliver of copper, so the eye keeps jumping from accent to accent without settling on a beat.

In music, syncopation shifts the emphasis off the expected beat, giving the rhythm its lift and swing. Here, the blocks sit just off any grid, in different depths and sizes, some weathered and some freshly painted, and the black between them works like the silence between notes. The result is lively and dense, closer to jazz than to a march.

Signed. Ready to hang.

Acrylic, Gold Leaf, found wood
