Several large sunflower heads fill the horizontal format against a dark ground. Yellow and ochre petals are set among deep greens, turquoise passages and red-brown centres. The close composition gives the flowers weight without turning the scene into a formal botanical study.
Broad, textured brushwork keeps the surface active, especially around the petals and leaves. The dark background holds the colours together and makes the warmer areas appear brighter.
