Strength doesn't always hold its ground for me, and I wanted a painting that showed that. Sometimes it bends under what it's carrying and keeps going anyway.
The branches in this one visibly sag under the weight of the roses. Behind them I used a green with an iridescent quality, so it shifts between near-black depth and a faint glow depending on where you're standing and how the light falls. The same canvas can look heavier or brighter without anything on it actually changing. I wanted something close to monochrome that still had light moving through it, fragile and strong at once.
For me that's close to what presence has come to mean while I paint: not resisting the weight, just staying with it.
Move around a little in front of this one and you'll see what I mean. The shimmer isn't fixed in the paint. It depends on you being there to catch it.
