Original artwork description
Two amber eyes hold your gaze through a curtain of dark hair, and the face between them is painted not in skin tones but in pure colour: patches of yellow, scarlet, emerald and cobalt laid side by side like light through a prism. Rainbow Gaze is a large expressionist portrait with a pop art edge, where the hair falls across the face in long black strands streaked with blue and violet, and the mouth, in glossy red, is the one place the colour settles into something almost real.
The painting belongs to my series She Is the Muse, a group of portraits of imagined women in which colour stands in for character. This one is about directness. Nothing in the pose is soft or turned away, the eyes meet yours straight on, and the wild hair only makes the stillness of the look stronger. It is a face that seems to know exactly what it wants.
The canvas measures 60 x 80 cm (about 23.6 x 31.5 inches) in portrait format, large enough to dominate a wall on its own. It is made for a living room, a hallway, a studio or a creative office that wants one strong, colourful focal point, and it looks especially good on a white, grey or black wall where the yellow face comes forward.
It is painted in oil on stretched cotton canvas.
