Phoenix (2026) Original Sculpture by Charlie Kamping

Phoenix is centred around one of the oldest symbols of transformation: the flame.

I created the flame from coloured and transparent glass using glass-fusing techniques and enclosed it within a structure of brass and a circular copper form. The rigid geometry of the metal contrasts with the organic movement of the glass, which seems to rise upwards like fire.

For this sculpture I deliberately used reclaimed copper and brass. Giving these materials a new existence is important to me, but their reuse also became part of the meaning of the work. The Phoenix has always represented renewal — the idea that an ending can simultaneously be the beginning of something new.

For me the work carries that thought in a very simple sentence: Life never ends.

Light completes the sculpture. Passing through the fused glass, it changes the reds, oranges and yellows throughout the day, repeatedly bringing the flame back to life.
