Plein air painting study
When I conceived this composition, I wanted to capture that fragile boundary between the fundamental and the ephemeral — between what we consider our anchor and what the flow of moments carries away.
At the center of the canvas is a stack of books: dense, weighty, as though carved from time itself. Their spines and edges are rendered with deliberate precision — this is knowledge accumulated over years, bodies of rules, maps of worlds arranged in a strict hierarchy. Resting on the topmost book are paper boats — angular yet stubborn in their simplicity. They do not seek to argue with the weight of the books; rather, they accept it as a starting point. Another little boat hovers slightly apart, as if it has just slipped off an invisible wave — a symbol of impulse that waits for no permission but simply sets sail.
The color palette is intentionally restrained: muted grayish-blue and warm yellow-ochre tones create a sense of stillness in which you can almost hear a page rustling and the wind catching a paper sail. Soft tonal transitions and a slight blur of the background detach the composition from mundane specificity, elevating it to the realm of reflection.
For me, this painting is about the balance between grounding and freedom. Books are our foundation, yet without the paper boats, without the courage to fold a sheet and set it adrift on the waves, knowledge remains an immovable burden. And a paper boat without the anchor of books is but a chance scrap caught by a draft. Their union lies in conscious movement: when experience gives direction and imagination gives speed. It is a quiet manifesto that the journey begins where the solid meets the light, where knowledge becomes the wind in the sails.
