Ignite

Ignite explores the point at which intimacy becomes energy.

The human form is partially revealed and partially dissolved within a field of intense colour, creating an image that shifts between figurative painting and abstraction. Warm, flame-like tones move across the body, suggesting heat, passion and transformation rather than simply describing physical form.

The composition is deliberately ambiguous. The figure emerges from the surrounding colour and then seems to disappear back into it, allowing the viewer to discover the image gradually. This tension between what is exposed and what remains concealed gives the work its sensuality and emotional charge.

Created in oil, the layered surface gives the painting depth and luminosity, with changes in tone and texture becoming more apparent at close range. The work continues James Shipton’s exploration of human anatomy, intimacy and the expressive possibilities of the body, while moving beyond straightforward representation.

The title Ignite reflects that moment of activation — a spark of attraction, emotion or desire that grows into something more powerful.

A bold, contemporary figurative work that balances sensuality with abstraction.
